On June 4, 2021, the finals of the 5th "Interwiser Cup" FPGA Model Machine Design Competition were successfully concluded after the final defense held in the Hardware Laboratory of Yifu Building, East Campus, Xi'an University of Posts and Telecommunications. Co-organized by Xi'an Interwiser Electronic Technology Co.,Ltd and the School of Computer Science at Xi'an University of Posts and Telecommunications, this competition attracted more than 60 teams from across the university to register. After rigorous evaluation, 12 outstanding teams advanced to the finals.
At the final competition venue, each participating team comprehensively showcased their FPGA-based model computer designs through online demonstrations and defenses. To enhance CPU performance, the students made extensive use of advanced architectural techniques such as pipelining and superscalar design, and thoroughly optimized the hardware resources of the development boards. All final projects fully implemented a 32-instruction set architecture covering arithmetic and logic operations, data access, and program control. Moreover, several teams took on more challenging high-level designs and successfully implemented interrupt and exception-handling mechanisms. Among these, the multi-cycle CPU design featuring a five-stage pipeline stood out as a particularly impressive achievement. The corresponding team effectively tackled key technical challenges such as data hazards and control hazards, demonstrating outstanding capabilities in system architecture design and engineering implementation.
After fierce competition, the contest ultimately awarded three first-place prizes, four second-place prizes, and five third-place prizes. The winning entries stood out in terms of design innovation, functional completeness, and technical feasibility, and a group of outstanding student teams emerged prominently during the competition.
Xi'an Interwiser Electronic Technology Co.,Ltd provided full-process technical support for the competition. Senior engineers from the company participated in the competition's judging panel, offering participating students valuable industry insights and practical guidance. This university-enterprise cooperation model effectively promotes the deep integration of industry, academia, and research, and builds a bridge for students to move from theory to practice.
As a brand-name competition that has been held for five consecutive sessions, the “Birui Cup” FPGA Model Machine Design Contest has become an important platform for cultivating system-level capabilities in the School of Computer Science. The contest not only sparks students’ enthusiasm for innovation and enhances their engineering practice skills but also identifies and reserves outstanding talent for the National College Students’ Competition on Computer System Capability Development. This event fully demonstrates the remarkable effectiveness of university-enterprise collaborative education in promoting teaching reform and fostering innovative talents, providing strong support for the cultivation of innovative talent in computer systems.
